About the Nickel

Celebrating and inspiring independent filmmaking in Newfoundland and Labrador since 2001.

Founded in 2001, the Nickel Independent Film Festival is a celebration of independent filmmaking in Newfoundland & Labrador. We're named after the former Nickel theatre, Newfoundland's first cinema, founded way back in 1907.

Our annual summer festival takes place in beautiful provincial capital of St. John's, and features a week blocked with film screenings, workshops, discussion panels, and networking events. We aspire to create an enthusiastic and creative atmosphere that leaves audiences and filmmakers feeling a strong connection to independent film culture in the province.

Beyond our summer fest, we offer a variety of filmmaking workshops, creative film challenges, and mentorship programs throughout the year. Our cross-province school tours and educational outreach programs offer curriculum-based learning opportunities for students from professional filmmakers. Our Nickel Youth Film Fest is an annual event aimed at inspiring the next generation of filmmakers in Newfoundland and Labrador. Our film challenges provide a great opportunity for new and experienced filmmakers alike to connect with the joy of filmmaking and develop their skills.

See you at the Nickel!
